
Read Books
Alexa can access ebooks purchased through Amazon’s Kindle service or audiobooks from Audible. You can simply tell Alexa to read these books for you and control when to pause, resume, move forward, go back, go to a chapter, and change volume with your voice. This function is especially useful for those with visual impairment, learning disabilities or reading difficulties.
This function does not need any setup. If you have purchased any ebooks from Amazon’s Kindle service, you should find them in your Alexa app when you click “Play” at the bottom. You can simply ask Alexa to read those books for you. If you have subscribed to Audible, which is a paid online audiobook and podcast service, you can also ask Alexa to read books in your Audible book collection. You do not need to configure any setting for Alexa to read Audible books. If you would like to have Alexa read Audible books from the Audible app, you should make sure Hands-free with Alexa is enabled under Profile/Setting/Alexa in your Audible app.
Play audiobook and control progress
You can simply ask Alexa to read a book in your Kindle or Audible collection. If you can remember the book title, you can ask Alexa to read the specific book and otherwise you can ask Alexa to select a book to read from your collection. You can control when to pause, resume, go back, move forward, go to a chapter, adjust reading speed, and adjust volume.
Alexa, read “Book Title” or my book from my Kindle or Audible.
Alexa, pause or resume.
Alexa, go back 3 minutes or move forward 3 minutes.
Alexa, stop reading in 20 minutes.
Alexa, read faster or read slower or read at normal speed.
Alexa, increase volume or decrease volume.
Mrs. Smith who is 80 years old has recently been experiencing reduced vision due to age-related macular degeneration. This has made it increasingly difficult for her to read her books. To help her continue to enjoy her passion for reading, her daughter helped her subscribe Audible and select her favorite books. She can ask Alexa to read books at any time. At bedtime, Mrs. Smith tells Alexa to read her favorite book, and she can control when to stop Alexa by telling it to “stop reading in 20 minutes”. This allows her to read for a set amount of time without having to worry about keeping track of the time or fall asleep. In addition, the ability to control the reading speed by asking Alexa to “read faster” or “read slower” and adjust volume at her will.

It can remember where the reading stopped. If you ask Alexa to read a book without providing a title next time, it will auto resume from where it was left off.
It is important to remember the book titles. If you provide an inaccurate book title, it may not be able to find the book you intend to read. Therefore, it is helpful that you know how to find your books via Alexa app or Audible app.
This function would be useful for individuals who are blind or experience visual impairments that make it difficult to read books.
