Alexa Group Calling

Alexa Echo devices provide the option to make group calls, allowing you to connect with multiple individuals simultaneously, with a maximum of up to 7 people. It is important to note that this feature is only available on Echo devices and is not supported on the Alexa app or phones.

You will need to set up the group to make the group call through the Alexa app.
1. Tap Communicate at the bottom and then the person icon on in the top right corner.
2. Tap Add New and you will have the option to Add Group or Add Contact. Select Add Group.
3. Select the people you want to be in the group, using search if necessary. Note that Alexa will need access to your contacts to make the additions. If you haven't imported contacts, tap the three-dot icon at the top right corner of the Contacts menu and enable Import Contacts. Also note that only those in your contacts that have an Echo device will show for you to select.
4. Once you've selected the people you want, tap Continue at the bottom of the page. Up to six people can be selected.
5. You will then be asked to name the group. Alexa will use this name to initiate a group call, so make sure the name is easy for you to remember and for Alexa to understand. Then click Create Group.
6. Your group will now appear on the CONTACTS page under GROUPS. All group members will receive a message on their Echo devices or Alexa app that they have been added to your group.
7. Say "Alexa, call (group name)".

Mrs. Smith is an 85-year-old widow who lives alone in her own home. She has been experiencing some difficulty with mobility and feeling increasingly isolated. Her daughter introduced her the group call function. She was excited about the possibility of staying connected with her grandchildren despite the distance. She would often use the group call function by saying “Alexa, call my children” to call her daughter and grandchildren at the same time to chat and catch up on their lives. Mrs. Smith also found that the group call function was useful for staying connected with her community. Her daughter helped her create a “Chat Group”. She was able to easily initiate calls to her neighbors and friends by saying “Alexa, call Chat Group”. She enjoys the convenience of being able to initiate calls without having to dial phone numbers or fumble with a phone.

 Pros:

This function is easy to use once it is set up and you can remember the name of your groups.

 Cons:

You will need to use the Alexa app for (1) setting up the groups for this function, and (2) checking the names of your groups if you could not recall how you name them.

You can only add the individuals in your contacts who have an Alexa app or Echo device to a group.

  • This function would be especially useful for individuals with motor or visual impairments, allowing them to simply use their voice to initiate the call and communicate with family and friends all at once.
  • This function would be especially useful for those who have low digital literacy.
